- Today’s idiom: “feather in one’s cap”, something to be proud of; an honor. “It was a feather in his cap to win first prize in the competition.”
- To Think About: The Bible says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

- Today’s idiom: “elbow grease”, Exertion, effort, energy, hard work. “You’ll have to use a little more elbow grease to get those windows clean.

- And today we celebrate the gift of God of His Son, Jesus, born into this existence, to be our Saviour, and give us eternal life. Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift. Merry Christmas to all!!

Today’s word: “can of beans” - cheap, easy way to provide for a meal. “I think I’ll just heat up a can of beans for supper, and maybe a sandwich to go with it.” - Today’s idiom: “doesn’t add up to a can of beans”, to be of little or no value; plans, ideas, etc. “Your idea sounds interesting but actually it doesn’t add up to a can of beans”.

Today’s word: “card”, any playing card used in a card game; hard piece of paper for writing notes, recipes. - Today’s idiom: “card up one’s sleeve”, another plan, help, or argument kept back for use if needed. “John knew his mother would lend him money if necessary but he kept that card up his sleeve, until needed.”
- To think about: The Bible says, “but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”. Romans 5:8

Today’s word: “bark”, vocal sound a dog makes. “The dog startled us by his bark while we were watching TV.”
Today’s idiom: “bark up the wrong tree”, to choose the wrong course of action; mistake in judgment. “He is barking up the wrong tree when he blames his troubles on bad luck.”

Today’s word: “walk”, the simplest way of going somewhere, just walk. “even using the train, a person has to walk to the station.”
Today’s idiom: “walk of life”, way of living, what one does for a living. “People from every walk of life enjoyed the firewalks display.”To think about: The Bible says, “For since the creation of the world His [God’s] invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.” Romans 1:20- #X-1
Today’s word: “grabs”, to take by sudden grasp. “He grabbed for all the candy his hand could hold.”Today’s idiom: “up for grabs”, available for anyone to try to get; there for the taking. “Since no one was designated to be the leader, the position was up for grabs.”To think about: The Bible says, “The wrath of God is being revealed froml heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them because God has made it plain to them . . . . so that men are without excuse.” Romans 1:18, 19, 20.- #IX-15
Today’s word: “exception”, to single out an item for different treatment. “All the class will do the assigned work with the exception of those who are in the class play.”
“Today’s idiom: “take exception”, to speak against; find fault with, criticize. “I take exception to what you said about the chances of the Urawa Reds to win their division.”To think about: In the Bible, the apostle Paul said, “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes. . .” Romans 1:16- #IX-14
Today’s word: “daylight”, light from the sun, between sunrise and sunset. “On the farm, we had to do our outside work during the daylight hours.”Today’s idiom: “see daylight”, to know that the end of a project is near. “We thought we would never finish building the house, but now we can see daylight”.To think about: The Bible speaks about “the gospel of God - the gospel He promised beforehand through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding His Son, who , , , was declared with power to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 1:2,3,4- #IX-13
- Today’s Word: “lines”, a row of something, as words on a page; vegetables in a garden, or boundary on a highway. “Even without lines on the paper he wrote in a straight line”.
- Today’s idiom: “read between the lines”, to understand all of a writer’s meaning by guessing at what he did not say. “One had to read between the lines to understand what the hostage had written to avoid censorship”.
- To think about: The Bible says, “As his custom was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and proving that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. ‘This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ’, he said”. Acts 17:2,3

- Today’s Word: “buck”, male animal (as a deer); term for a dollar. “He made 20 bucks an hour painting houses.”
- Today’s idiom: “pass the buck”, to make another person decide or be responsible for a difficult decision. “He would never admit he had made a mistake, but passed the buck on someone else.”
- To think about: An account in the Bible, book of Acts: “He (the jailor) than brought them out and asked, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ They (Paul & Silas) replied, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will saved - you and your household.’” Acts 16:30,31

- Today’s idiom: “off the top of one’s head”, speaking without giving much thought to the question or answer; quick response. “Well, Just off the top of my head I’d say the old car is worth about 50,000 yen”. (Would a car like that even be allowed on the road??)
- To think about:The Bible says, about the early disciples, “And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.” Acts 5:42

- Today’s Word: “bud”, a partly opened flower. “Put the bouquet in water and the buds will open up in full bloom.”
- Today’s idiom: “nip in the bud”, to block or destroy an activity in the beginning; prevent something from happening at the start. “The police were able to nip in the bud the plot to bomb the embassy”.
- To think about:The Bible says, about Jesus, “there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

- Today’s idiom: “lay down the law”, to give strict orders, speak seriously about a wrong-doing. “The coach really laid down the law about observing the rules.”
- To think about: The Bible says, “Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made Him (Jesus) both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” Acts 2:36

- Today’s Word: “keep”, guard, maintain, in one’s possession. “My wife is going to keep the set of dishes that her grandmother gave her.”
- Today’s idiom: “keep your eye on the ball”, be watchful, ready, wide-awake, ready to do whatever is necessary. “Tom is just starting on the job but if he keeps his eye on the ball, he will be promoted.”
- To think about: The Bible says, “This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.” Acts 2:32

- Today’s idiom: “just what the doctor ordered”, exactly what was needed or wanted. “That cold drink on a hot day was just what the doctor ordered.”
- To think about: The Bible says, concerning Jesus, “But God raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him! !” Acts 2:24

- Today’s idiom: “hand-to-mouth”, living each day from day to day; not saving for later. “Our salary was so small when we were first married, we were living hand-to-mouth, not able to have enough for more than a day at a time.”
- To think about: Jesus said, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

- Today’s idiom: “get away with it”, to do something bad or wrong without being caught or punished. “Those kids always seem to get away with not doing their homework.”
- To think about: Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” John 16:23,24

- Today’s word: “farm”, large acreage for growing vegetables, grain, fruit, animals for sale. “On Dale’s farm he grows many acres of corn and soybeans.”
- Today’s idiom: “farm out”, to have another person or business do something for you. “Our teacher had so many test papers to read that she had to farm out half of them to a friend.”
- To think about: Jesus said, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
